ERNICA Consensus Conference: Perioperative and Surgical Management of Esophageal Atresia

5 August 2018

A consensus meeting Perioperative and Surgical Management of Esophageal Atresia will take place on 25th and 26th October 2018 in Berlin (Aesculap Academy).

During recent ERNICA meetings in Rotterdam, Helsinki and Stockholm it has become clear that there is little evidence concerning current diagnostic and therapeutic concepts of esophageal atresia. In particular surgical aspects and the perioperative management of patients with esophageal atresia are under discussion. There is a variety of co-existing protocols, but generally accepted guidelines and algorithms are lacking.

The members of ERNICA Workstream Esophagus agreed to perform a consensus conference and to elaborate a consensus paper on surgical aspects of the management of esophageal atresia. Twenty experts with extensive experience in the field who are representatives of ERNICA institutions are invited. A pediatric gastroenterologist, a methodologist and representatives of patient support groups are included.

The consensus meeting will deal with relevant operative and perioperative aspects and will be focused on pediatric surgeons. Statements of the participants in form of consensus or non-consensus on various diagnostic and therapeutic aspects are planned to be published for further use throughout Europe. The relevant literature (level I evidence) will be sent to all participants before the conference. The results of the meeting are planned to be published in the European Journal of Pediatric Surgery.
